Harper & Row. 1971. New York. 340 pages. First Edition, First Printing. First issue DJ. Stated FIRST EDITION on the copyright page. The last printed page of the book is the About the Author page. At the base of the page is the correct number sequence which reads 71 72 73 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1. SIGNED and inscribed by William Peter Blatty directly to the title page. Inscription reads: With every kind wish, ____, William Peter Blatty. Book is clean and tight. Slightest lean. Panel edges show shelf rub. Tiny loss of cloth at corner tip. Burgundy colored boards quarter bound with burgundy cloth binding. Gilt titles on backstrip. Gold endpapers are clean and bright. The original 1st issue DJ is in lesser condition than the crisp book. The 1st issue DJ meets all points with the photo on the rear that shows Mr. Blatty from the thighs up. Later DJs show a close-up of Mr. Blatty’s face. Additional matching points of the 1st issue DJ include a $6.95 price intact on the DJ flap and 0571 printed on the bottom or front flap. DJ shows a couple of flaws. A small stain on DJ rear that likely could be cleaned off. A couple of small chips along the edge at the crown of the backstrip and flap fold corners. A crisper DJ would make a world of difference but this is still VG, just with a couple of small edge chips. A rare signed first printing of the enduring classic, signed by the generous and kind, William Peter Blatty.
